Hose-Reel Irrigation Systems

With its large, retractable hoses wound on a reel, the Hose-Reel Irrigation System is considered a type of “traveling” sprinkler system.

Water pressure (via water pumped from the water source) activates the sprinkler gun cart which is located at the far end of the hose. The slow and automatic retraction of the hose pulls the gun cart back to the reel while it irrigates the field in a strip pattern. It is then reset after each pass.

The system can easily be moved from field to field, thereby covering large acreage. High pressure is required (for both water delivery and hose retraction) and the system is subject to evaporation loss and wind drift.

Common applications include:

  • Hay and forage fields
  • Cereal crops (i.e., wheat, rice, oats, rye, sorghum, millet, barley, etc.
  • Turf and sod farms
  • Large field vegetable production
