Debedding
Debedding involves the mechanical breakdown and leveling of any existing raised beds at the end of the current cropping cycle. It’s done in anticipation of replanting for the next season or field renovations or crop rotations. Some regions may refer to debedding as bed busting, bed removal or bed knocking down.
Debedding is common for land where vegetables, row crops or annual fruit crops (i.e., strawberries, melons, blueberries, etc.) are produced.
Regular debedding can improve soil organics by mixing crop residues and decomposed mulch into the soil. Likewise, the flattened fields will have improved draining during the off-season and wet months.
